The MAIB (a Government Business
Enterprise) provides a compulsory third party scheme of no-fault and common law
benefits to persons injured as a result of motor accidents in Tasmania.
The Tasmanian Economic Regulator provides
independent pricing oversight of the MAIB’s pricing policies. It conducts an
investigation every four years to make recommendations on the maximum premiums
to be charged by the MAIB. The final decision on premiums rests with the
Tasmanian Government and is set out in a pricing Order tabled in Parliament.
Terms of Reference for each investigation are
jointly set by the Minister and Portfolio Minister. The Regulator conducts
investigations in accordance with Part 3 of the Economic Regulator Act.
