The Regulator's role in the gas industry is set out in the Gas Industry Act 2019 and related regulations. The Regulator oversees the construction and operation of Tasmania's gas system—from transmission and distribution through to retail—ensuring the industry operates efficiently and in the interests of gas consumers. (Safety matters are regulated separately by the Director of Gas Safety under the Gas Safety Act 2019.)
The Regulator's work is supported by four industry codes, which set minimum standards for providing gas services:
Under the Act and these codes, the Regulator is responsible for:
- licensing gas infrastructure owners/operators and gas retailers
- establishing and monitoring standards and codes
- reporting on the performance and condition of the gas industry
- enforcing compliance, including issuing administrative penalties where required
The Regulator does not regulate retail gas prices in Tasmania.
Tasmania's gas regulatory framework is designed to be light‑handed. Gas entities are expected to manage their day‑to‑day operations and comply with the codes and legislation. The Regulator focuses on transparency and disclosure, intervening only when necessary to address non‑compliance or protect consumer interests.
Licenced gas entities are required to provide performance data to the Regulator in line with relevant legislation, codes and licence conditions.
The performance of the Tasmanian gas supply industry is reporting annually in the Regulator's Energy in Tasmania reports.
Gas prices in Tasmania are also included in the Regulator's annual Price Comparison Reports.
