Retail Competition

As part of the May 2012 'Energy for the Future' reforms, full retail competition for retail electricity supply was introduced in Tasmania.
From 1 January 2014, Aurora Energy continued to be the retailer for those small customers who were non-contestable prior to 1 January 2014 (all residential customers and small business customers) on mainland Tasmania, offering regulated prices as approved by the Regulator in the form of a regulated standing offer contract.
From 1 January 2014 through to 30 June 2014, Aurora Energy was the only authorised retailer legally able to offer market retail contracts to this group of customers.
However, from 1 July 2014, other retailers are able to sell to all residential and business customers. This is referred to as 'full retail contestability' and may affect your power supply decisions in the long term.
Regulated (standing offer) prices are still available for those small customers (who were non-contestable prior to 1 January 2014) choosing not to enter into a market retail contract.
